Using keyboard shortcuts can significantly increase your productivity, reduce repetitive workloads and help you focus. For example, to copy text, you can select the text and press the key combination Ctrl + C. The shortcut is faster than removing your hands from the keyboard, selecting with the mouse, selecting a copy in the File menu and then returning to the keyboard.
Below are the top 10 keyboard shortcuts that we recommend everyone to remember and use.
Below are the top 10 keyboard shortcuts that we recommend everyone to remember and use.
Ctrl + C or Ctrl + Insert and Ctrl + X
Ctrl + C and Ctrl + Insert copy the selected text or selected item. If you want to cut an element instead of copying it, press Ctrl + X. This action deletes the text or element and saves it on the clipboard instead of copying it to the clipboard, leaving the original behind.
Apple computer users can replace the Ctrl key with the command key (cmd) on their computers. For example, pressing Cmd + C copies the selected text.
Ctrl + V or Shift + Insert
Ctrl + V and Shift + Insert will paste the text or object that is stored on the clipboard.
On Apple computers, use Cmd + V instead.
Use the above text input fields to select the text “Cut or copy this text” and press either Ctrl + C to copy, or Ctrl + X to cut the text. After cutting, go to the next field and press Ctrl + V or Shift + Insert to paste the text.
Ctrl + Z and Ctrl + Y
Pressing Ctrl + Z will undo any change. For example, if you crop text, pressing this key combination cancels the cropping. These combinations can also be pressed several times to undo or redo several changes. Pressing Ctrl + Y will return the cancel.
On Apple computers, use Cmd + Z and Cmd + Y to undo and redo.
Use the text input field above to select part of the text or all text, and then press Ctrl + X to cut the text. Once the text has disappeared, press Ctrl + Z to cancel the cut.
Ctrl + F and Ctrl + G
Pressing Ctrl + F opens the "Find" field, which allows you to search for the text currently displayed in any program that supports it. For example, Ctrl + F can be used in your Internet browser to search for text on the current page. Press Ctrl + F to open Find in your browser and search for a “shortcut” that will be displayed every time a shortcut is mentioned on this page.
On Apple computers, use Cmd + F to search.
Ctrl + G can be used to repeat a search (using Ctrl + F) in a document or on a web page.
Alt + Tab or Ctrl + Tab
Pressing Alt + Tab toggles between open programs that are moving forward. For example, if you have a browser window open and other programs running in the background, press and hold Alt, and then press the Tab key to cycle through each open program.
On Apple computers, use the Command key (Cmd) instead of the Alt key. For example, Cmd + Tab to switch between open programs.
Ctrl+Backspace and Ctrl+Left or Right arrow
Pressing Ctrl + Backspace deletes the full word at a time instead of a single character.
While holding down the Ctrl key while pressing the left or right arrow, the cursor moves one word at a time instead of one character at a time. If you want to select one word at a time, hold down the Ctrl + Shift key, and then press the left or right arrow key. Your highlighted selection moves one word at a time in that direction.
Ctrl + S
When working with a document or other file in almost every program, pressing Ctrl + S saves this file. Use this hotkey often if you are working on something important in case of an error, loss of power or any other problems that could lead to loss of work since the last save.
On Apple computers, use Cmd + S to save the file.
Ctrl + Home or Ctrl + End
Ctrl + Home moves the cursor to the beginning of the document, and Ctrl + End moves the cursor to the end of the document. These shortcuts work with most documents, as well as web pages.
On Apple computers, use the Cmd + up arrow to go to the beginning, or the Cmd + arrow to get to the end of a document or text.
Ctrl + P
Control + P is used to open a preview of the page or document currently being viewed. For example, press Ctrl + P now to preview this page.
On Apple computers, use Cmd + P to open a preview.
Page Up, Space and Page Down
As you may have guessed, pressing the page up or page down key moves to the next or previous page. When browsing the Internet, pressing the spacebar moves the scroll bar down the page. Similarly, Shift + Spacebar moves the scroll bar up one page.
