According to a report by The Telegraph, the social network Facebook and the Instagram photo-sharing app plan to create a system that will prevent minors from watching sexual content on their platforms.
According to the report, Facebook will “age restrict” certain categories of sexual content for users under the age of 18, probably starting in early 2020.
Under the new policy, advertisements and images depicting sexual activity will be hidden from users who have given the birth date of Facebook, which sets them under the age of 18. However, such content will be visible to adult users.
The new policy will affect advertisements containing “latent sexual activity,” images of works of art that depict sexual activity, and some fictitious images of sex, the report said.
He also added that the new rules will not change the previous policy regarding explicit sexual content, which is for the most part prohibited, with some exceptions. These include nursing parents who have survived cancer or some “clearly educational” sexual material.
The report said that Facebook consulted with 25 experts around the world, including artists, LGBT people and activists for freedom of speech, as well as child safety advocates who expressed their views on sexual content with age.
Although most of them called on Facebook to tighten their policies, a significant minority did not agree with this, saying that the age content of such content only enhances its sexuality.
For those who don’t know, Facebook is already aging a wide variety of content, such as advertisements for diets and diet pills, images of animals being abused, but an age restriction on sexual content was introduced for the first time.
